Portland in Color is back and excited to resume serving as a resource for building and connecting with other local BIPOC artists.
It has been way too long since you’ve heard from the Portland in Color team (with exception of our directory #vibecheck audit—if you’re a directory member, please check your inbox! ) and we hope that you missed us as much as we’ve missed you!
We’re returning to a monthly newsletter schedule chock full of funding and job opportunities, events, community support requests, new member spotlights and many many, more creative outlets.
There are so many exciting developments from us since we stepped back to evaluate how we could best service our creative community and so here’s a quick recap of what’s been going on behind the scenes:
Meet our Board of Directors
The Portland in Color Board of Directors is made up of (L-R):
Michelle Comer, Antha Reynolds (Secretary), Cay Horiuchi (Vice Chair)
Victor “Chaim” Schramm (Treasurer), Bruce Poinsette (Chair), Tracy Nguyen-Chung, Celeste Noche (President)
We spent the summer nominating passionate and experienced shareholders deeply invested in local BIPOC creative communities. We’re excited to continue working within our mission of supporting this community while knowing that our new board’s vast experience across overlapping industries will help us flourish.
Rooted Together - Summer Art Nature Walks
Sound bath and nature walk at Mount Tabor. Celeste Noche for Portland in Color
We were awarded a two year grant from Metro to conduct outdoor wellness events centered around getting BIPOC creatives in nature. This past summer we hosted a nature walk at Oxbow Park led by Cherilynn Tsosie, a walk through Mt. Tabor with Portland POC Hikes’ Omar Osnaya, and a meditation and sound bath led by our very own Cookie Zvovushe and Antha Reynolds. We look forward to planning our 2024 event and are open to suggestions if any community members would like to get involved!
Quarterly Meetups
Our networking event, Rose City Rolodex in 2019. Justin Katigbak for Portland in Color
Since we want to be very intentional and mindful of our collective limitations around time and energy, we plan to gather quarterly in a more casual meetup capacity. Lookout for small dinner gatherings, karaoke, and more.
We are very excited to resume producing events in 2024, both big and small, and present opportunities to support BIPOC creativity while we take up space together. If you would like to collaborate on monthly meetups, have space to donate for an event, or would like to share any event announcements, please get in touch.
That’s a wrap for our January newsletter, but please send us your events, opportunities, and new work to share in upcoming issues!
In Community,
The Portland in Color team
What is the Portland in Color directory?
Our public resource amplifies the work of BIPOC artists in the Portland area. This grassroots community platform connects members with job opportunities, fellow arts and media professionals, and rejects the narrative of a homogenous arts landscape.
Why should you join the directory?
Job opportunities, networking with fellow creatives, social media features of newly added artists, and it’s free! Join here.
